Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety Releases Statement on Violence in the Health Care Workplace
Urges employers to take proactive steps to ensure perioperative team member safety
Chicago: As violence against health care workers becomes a growing concern, the Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety (CSPS) today released a statement recognizing the depth of the crisis and encouraging employers to provide a hazard-free workplace.
In its statement, the CSPS says that violence or the threat of violence in the workplace must not be tolerated under any circumstances, and [it] interferes with the provision of safe, competent, and ethical health care.
The organization has found that despite the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, mandating that all employers have a general duty to prevent recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious physical harm, acts of violence are on the rise. In particular, nurses are at high risk for experiencing violence in the workplace, including intimidation, threats, physical attack, and sexual harassment. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 25 of every 10,000 full-time nurses were injured in workplace assaults in the year 2000, compared with two of every 10,000 employees in most private-sector industries. In fact, these statistics may reflect only a small portion of incidents, due to a belief that workplace assault is part of the job and, therefore, does not warrant reporting. The CSPS believes that responsibility for ensuring a violence-free perioperative environment is shared among all stakeholders in the health care setting.
Furthermore, the CSPS advocates that workplace violence prevention programs, including education and training, should be implemented in organizations that provide health care and employ members of the perioperative team.
Incorporated in August 2007, the Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety is a unique coalition of seven professional organizations representing the key members of the surgical team: the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, and the Association of Surgical Technologists. The Council and its member organizations have a combined total of more than 250,000 surgical health care team members and represent more than two million health care practitioners. The CSPS promotes excellence in patient safety in the surgical and perioperative environment and works to ensure that all patients receive the safest surgical care provided by an integrated team of dedicated professionals.

Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety Supports Implementation of Surgical Safety Checklist
Offers Assistance in Coordinating Advocacy and Educational Efforts
Chicago—In an effort to help spearhead initiatives aimed at increasing surgical patient safety, the Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety (CSPS) has pledged its support for the World Health Organization's (WHO) Safe Surgery Saves Lives campaign, “Surgical Safety Checklist Sprint.” The coalition has offered its help with the effort—the goal of which is to have every US hospital test the Checklist by April 1, 2009.
In her letter to Atul Gawande, MD, FACS, who leads the Safe Surgery Saves Lives program, Lena Napolitano, MD, FACS, Chair of the CSPS Board of Directors, stated that “The CSPS can coordinate advocacy and educational efforts regarding the Surgical Safety Checklist with the goal of universal implementation. We are committed to implementation of all strategies that support safe surgery for all patients. Therefore, we enthusiastically offer to collaborate with the WHO on this important effort to improve surgical patient safety. ”
CSPS plans to contribute to this effort by using its multidisciplinary membership to get the Checklist into hospitals and put into use by operating room teams. The CSPS intends to work with its members to help them understand the rationale for the Safe Surgery Saves Lives effort and to disseminate the study data published in the January 14, 2009, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, which demonstrated that implementation of the Checklist during major operations was associated with a significant reduction in mortality and complications. CSPS is one of more than 300 organizations endorsing the WHO campaign, a testament to the growing concern among the US surgical community about the need to reduce surgical errors and undertake stronger surgical patient safety initiatives.
Incorporated in August 2007, the Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety is a unique coalition of seven professional organizations representing the entire spectrum of the surgical team: the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants, the American College of Surgeons, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, and the Association of Surgical Technologists. New Group on Surgical and Perioperative Safety
Incorporates in the State of IL
CHICAGO: A multidisciplinary coalition of professional organizations whose members are involved in the care of surgical patients has incorporated as the Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety (CSPS) in the state of Illinois. The mission and vision of the CSPS is to promote a culture of patient safety with members of the surgical team working together to provide optimal patient care and a caring perioperative workplace environment.
Voting members from seven organizations serve as the CSPS Board of Directors and include the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists; the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants; the American College of Surgeons; the American Society of Anesthesiologists; the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses; the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses; and the Association of Surgical Technologists.
The goals of the CSPS are to:
► create opportunities for strategic, informed dialogue
► identify areas of potential internal and external collaboration to improve surgical patient safety and perioperative workplace environments
► share information and establish ongoing lines of communication between member organizations
► raise awareness among the public, healthcare leaders, and members of the perioperative team
► provide or facilitate joint educational opportunities for members of the team
► coordinate advocacy efforts for surgical patient safety and a caring workplace environment
The idea for the CSPS resulted from a summit on perioperative care cosponsored by the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses in February 2004. At that summit, nurse anesthetists, surgical physician assistants, perianesthesia nurses, and surgical technologists were invited to participate. A number of shared themes emerged which led to the concept of creating a culture of patient safety through cooperative efforts and communication among the entire perioperative team.
At its July 15, 2007, meeting, the Board of Directors elected Jeffery M. Beutler, CRNA, MS (from the American Association of Nurse Anesthestists) as Chair; Lena M. Napolitano, MD, FACS (from the American College of Surgeons) as Vice Chair, and; Sharon McNamara, RN, MS, CNOR (from the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) as Secretary/Treasurer.
